Overview

Religion
Through the Sadlier religion curriculum, We Believe, the children learn about God’s love, being followers of Jesus, belonging to the church, and how to celebrate and live in our faith. They will learn our daily prayers and attend Mass every Friday, along with every third Tuesday.

Language Arts/ Reading
In First Grade, we implement  Journey curriculum, which covers grammar (i.e. nouns, verbs, adjectives, prepositions, sentences), phonics (i.e. short/long vowels, blends, digraphs), vocabulary, writing, reading fluency (i.e. accuracy, phrasing, stressing, expression) and reading comprehension. We also work with weekly spelling words and sight words.

Math
OLQP utilizes the Saxon curriculum for math, incorporating manipulatives and the interactive white board regularly. The students will be engaged with the topics of number sense, addition, subtraction, fractions, money, patterns, shapes, time and date, linear measurement, sorting, graphing, probability, and developing skills and strategies for problem solving,

Social Studies
In the classroom, the first graders will improve their map and globe skills, chart and graph skills, citizenship skills and learn more about the world around them through the Harcourt Horizons curriculum.

Science
The Science Fusion curriculum for first grade is broken up into nature of science, life science, earth science and physical science.  Throughout the year the children will explore and experiment while discovering various topics.  They will also participate in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) activities.
